ReelShort Expands Southeast Asia Footprint Through New Partnership With Globe Philippines

Share

ReelShort, the U.S.-based microdrama platform that has emerged as one of the leading players in the rapidly growing short-form drama industry, has announced a new distribution partnership with Globe, one of the Philippines’ largest telecommunications providers. The agreement marks ReelShort’s second major collaboration with a Southeast Asian telecom operator within just two months, underscoring the company’s commitment to expanding its presence across the region’s highly connected, mobile-first markets.

The partnership was officially revealed during the APOS media conference in Bali and will integrate ReelShort’s extensive catalog of short-form dramatic content into Globe’s digital entertainment offerings for Filipino subscribers.

Globe, which is jointly backed by the Philippines’ Ayala Corporation and Singapore-based Singtel, will make ReelShort’s content accessible to its customer base in one of the world’s most active mobile internet markets. The arrangement was facilitated by AR Global Media Network, which serves as ReelShort’s exclusive distribution partner throughout Southeast Asia.

Building on Momentum in Southeast Asia

The new agreement follows ReelShort’s earlier expansion into Thailand, where the company entered into a similar partnership with telecommunications giant AIS in April. Under that arrangement, AIS introduced a co-branded subscription package that offered ReelShort content at a heavily discounted rate through its mobile plans.

For a platform built around quick, spontaneous viewing habits, partnerships with telecom operators provide immediate access to large audiences while simplifying payment and subscription processes. This strategy is particularly valuable in emerging markets where consumers may be reluctant to subscribe directly to digital services.

In Thailand, the AIS partnership offered access to ReelShort for approximately $1 per month, significantly below the platform’s standard subscription price of around $17.50.

Commenting on the latest expansion, Joey Jia, CEO of Crazy Maple Studio, the parent company of ReelShort, highlighted the importance of the Philippine market to the company’s broader regional ambitions.

“After receiving an overwhelmingly positive response in Thailand, our partnership with Globe in the Philippines represents another major step forward in our Southeast Asian growth strategy,” Jia said.

A Global Leader in the Microdrama Boom

Founded in 2022, ReelShort has quickly established itself as one of the most recognizable brands in the microdrama sector. The company reports reaching more than 70 million monthly users across over 100 countries worldwide.

Its content library contains nearly 3,000 titles, featuring the genres that have become synonymous with the microdrama phenomenon, including billionaire romances, revenge-driven storylines, family conflicts, and emotionally charged cliffhanger narratives designed to keep viewers engaged episode after episode.

One of the platform’s most successful productions, Bound by Honor, has reportedly generated hundreds of millions of views, demonstrating the strong global demand for short-form serialized storytelling.

Unlike many competitors that primarily target domestic Chinese audiences, ReelShort built its reputation by producing professionally made English-language microdramas specifically aimed at Western viewers. This positioning helped differentiate the platform from many of the Chinese companies that pioneered the format.

Although Crazy Maple Studio is headquartered in Silicon Valley, it maintains strong ties to China. The company’s largest external shareholder is COL Group, which holds an ownership stake of approximately 49 percent.

Intensifying Competition in the Region

As ReelShort expands across Southeast Asia, it enters an increasingly competitive landscape. Chinese platform DramaBox remains one of its strongest rivals, and several major microdrama companies are aggressively competing for market share throughout the region.

Southeast Asia has become a key battleground due to its young population, high smartphone penetration, and rapidly growing appetite for mobile entertainment. These factors have made the region especially attractive to companies seeking to scale short-form video services.

Despite impressive audience growth and increasing consumer interest, however, the microdrama industry still faces questions regarding long-term profitability. Many operators continue to invest heavily in content production, user acquisition, and marketing, resulting in significant operating costs that have yet to be fully offset by subscription and advertising revenues.

Globe Strengthens Its Content Ecosystem

For Globe, the partnership represents another step in its broader strategy of expanding beyond traditional telecommunications services. By adding premium entertainment offerings such as ReelShort to its ecosystem, the company aims to increase customer engagement and provide additional value to subscribers.

As competition among telecom operators intensifies, content partnerships have become an increasingly important tool for customer retention and differentiation. The addition of ReelShort’s growing library of short-form dramas is expected to strengthen Globe’s digital entertainment portfolio while giving Filipino consumers greater access to one of the fastest-growing content formats in the global streaming industry.

With its latest agreement in the Philippines, ReelShort continues to accelerate its expansion throughout Southeast Asia, positioning itself to capitalize on the region’s growing appetite for mobile-first entertainment and the continuing rise of the global microdrama market.
