Vodafone Idea Launches 5G in New Delhi, Expands Nationwide Rollout

Share

Telecommunications provider Vodafone Idea (Vi) has officially launched its 5G services in New Delhi, a significant step in its country-wide rollout. This follows initial launches in Mumbai, Chandigarh, and Patna, with plans to extend 5G to 17 priority regions by August 2025.

Key Rollout Details and Network Enhancements

Vi’s 5G expansion is part of a substantial INR 55,000 crore capital expenditure planned over three years. Cities like Bengaluru and Mysuru are next in line for deployment, with other key markets also underway.

For its subscribers, Vi is offering unlimited 5G data on plans starting at INR 299 for compatible devices. This upgrade promises a superior digital experience, enabling:

  • Seamless UHD streaming
  • Enhanced gaming
  • Clearer video conferencing
  • Faster downloads
  • Real-time cloud access

In the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR), Vi has partnered with Ericsson to modernize its network, replacing older 2G and 4G equipment with Ericsson’s advanced Radio System. This includes the deployment of AIR 3268 and AIR 3255 Massive MIMO radios, which boost spectrum efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and optimize network performance for seamless 5G connectivity.

Strategic Partnerships and Technological Advancements

Ericsson’s role extends beyond Delhi, with a contract awarded in October 2024 to upgrade Vi’s 4G infrastructure and expand 5G services across several other cities, including Kerala, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan. Andres Vicente, Head of Ericsson Southeast Asia, Oceania, and India, emphasized Ericsson’s commitment to supporting Vi in building a robust digital infrastructure for India’s evolving connectivity needs.

Beyond hardware upgrades, Vi has implemented AI-driven self-organizing network (SON) technology to further optimize performance. The operator is utilizing a 5G non-standalone (NSA) architecture, ensuring smooth transitions between 4G and 5G networks.

Jagbir Singh, Chief Technology Officer of Vodafone Idea, stated that the Delhi 5G launch is a “pivotal step” in Vi’s journey to deliver next-generation connectivity, equipping users with the necessary speed, reliability, and capacity for a digitally connected world.

Vi’s 5G deployment in Bengaluru is expected to go live later this month, further expanding its growing 5G footprint.
